PEEFAOE. There are at the présent time prevailing in this country two Systems of teaching modem languages. While in one the mother-tongne of the pupil is used as the médium whichby the instruction is given, in the other the foreign language that is to be studied serves at the same time onlyas the médium of communication between pupil and teacher. Professors of either System may employ this volume to the best advantage. In classes of "French where English is spoken, Etudeprogressive de la langue française" may be taken as a progres- sive reader, and, according to the judgment of the teacher, either after having finished the whole or a part of the grammar. In classes where French only is spoken, this book is to the professor a guide for his préparations, and to the students a iirst reader.
